Peepshow: Performance
ICA London, November 2001 (2001)
Peepshow: originally produced to accompany a performance at the Erotic Awards was shown at the ICA’s Halloween society night where films are shown with a live soundtrack. I worked with musicians on the live soundtrack version shown here, producing a text which reflected on the dichotomy that exists between images of glamour and beauty (in this case as epitomised by the films of Busby Berkley) and the fragility of those who personify these qualities in our society. The feminine body (or in this case my feminized transgender body) shown in this "Peepshow" becomes degraded by the voyeuristic eye of the viewer and is ultimately the victim of the violence of a sexist society epitomised in the transactions that take place between the consumer and the “consumed” image.
