Animal Union is the first trade union dedicated to defending the rights of all animals. We encourage applications from members representing different chapters of the Union all around the world.

This project was inspired by the principles of the sumak kawsay or “Living Well” which through their implementation in the constitution of Ecuador (2009) and Bolivia (2010, 2012) gave legal rights to the Earth, setting a precedent for environmental activism worldwide, the Animal Union proposes that such legal protection be given to all living beings worldwide.

“The purpose of this Law is to establish the vision and foundations of integral development in harmony and balance with Mother Earth in order to Live Well, guaranteeing the continuity of the regenerative capacity of the components and life systems of Mother Earth, recovering and strengthening local knowledge and ancestral knowledge, within the framework of the complementarity of rights, obligations and responsibilities.”

The Animal Union arises at the moment homo sapiens becomes homo insipiens, accepts that we are at a turning point in our history. We believed that we were rational animals and this distinguished us from the rest. Religions fostered the idea that this gave us the right to use the fruits of the Earth, to be its keepers. But as we turn the rich biodiversity of the earth into a monoculture it seems clear we are no longer capable of taking care of our planet, if indeed we ever were. We are at a dead end. And we can fatalistically accept our ending, imagining that things will go on when we are gone- after all, it is likely that some bacteria and other creatures may survive the melt down and in a distant future more complex forms of life may evolve once again on this planet. But are we prepared to accept the loss of all the mammals, reptiles, birds, insects, plants, trees? Are we prepared to accept that most of these life forms will cease to exist?

We are at a turning point. Animal Union arises from the ashes of homo sapiens when we realise that the moral compass we have been following has led us to this dead end. And perhaps when even the United Nations ambassador admits that basic human rights are being ignored in Lebanon and Gaza and there is no response from our governments, then that governing body has no right to exist. Are we prepared to accept that money is more important than life?

When societies become so corrupt that they allow businessmen with obvious conflicts of interest to become their leaders it is obvious that our moral compass is completely skewed. Animals follow scents and trails and birds follow their own compasses and the magnetic field around the Earth to reach their destination. It is time that we reconfigured our compass and realised that we are part of Animal Union and that we must defend our planet. And that is why the ethics of a queer ecology must prevail. We must protect the animals, the soil, the water, the land, the trees, as well as the Palestinians, the Africans, the Bolivians and all oppressed beings.

El proyecto se inspiró en lo que se conoce en lengua Kichwa  como sumak kawsay, o “buena vida”, un principio indígena que promueve la convivencia en armonía con la naturaleza para lograr el bienestar de todos. Este principio ha sido incorporado en las constituciones de Ecuador (2009) y Bolivia (2010, 2012). Otorga derechos legales a la Tierra, sentando un precedente para el activismo ambiental a nivel mundial. La Unión Animal propone que se otorgue protección legal a todos los seres vivos del mundo.

El sindicato Animal Union surge en el momento en que el Homo sapiens se convierte en Homo  insipiens, reconociendo que estamos en un punto de inflexión en nuestra historia. Creíamos que éramos seres racionales y que eso nos distinguía del resto. Las religiones han fomentado la idea de que nuestra diferencia nos da derecho a utilizar los frutos de la Tierra, a ser sus propietarios. Pero al convertir la rica biodiversidad de la tierra en un monocultivo, queda claro que ya no somos capaces de cuidar nuestro planeta, si es que alguna vez lo fuimos.
El Animal Union surge de las cenizas de Homo sapiens, al darnos cuenta de que la brújula moral que hemos estado siguiendo nos ha llevado a este callejón sin salida. Cuando hasta el embajador de las Naciones Unidas admite que en Líbano y Gaza se están ignorando los derechos humanos básicos, y vemos poca o ninguna respuesta de nuestros gobiernos, ¿tiene la clase gobernante algún derecho a existir? ¿aceptamos  que el dinero es más importante que la vida?
Cuando las sociedades permiten que empresarios con evidentes conflictos de intereses se conviertan en sus líderes, la brújula moral obviamente se ha distorsionado. Los animales siguen olores y rastros;  los pájaros siguen sus propias brújulas yel campo magnético alrededor de la Tierra para llegar a su destino. Es hora de que reconfiguremos nuestra brújula moral y nos demos cuenta de que somos parte de este planeta y que debemos defender la  Animal Union. Y es por eso que la ética de una ecología queer debe prevalecer. Debemos proteger a los animales, el suelo, el agua, la tierra, los árboles, así como a los palestinos, los africanos, los bolivianos, y todos los seres oprimidos.
